What’s the point if you can’t SEE it?

You’ll never believe what I just heard.

 

Someone was looking at my new ad for the Chanel Tutorial and they said that the “fashion society” would frown upon my muslins that I have in my videos because the thread doesn’t match the off white muslin! (It’s ready and it’s AWESOME btw)

 

And to that I say…

 

Up THEIRS!!

 

Now I wasn’t upset at the person giving the information (after all you shouldn’t stone the messenger).

 

But for the love of Goodness, why on Earth would I want to sew in the same color?

 

Isn’t the point of my tutorials for students to LEARN from me?

 

Or do they need to see me make a beautiful muslin?

 

If you can’t figure that out, I’ll just tell you – option 2 ain’t it

 

The whole purpose is to teach and besides doing these super dooper ZOOM-IN angles, I also sew in another color so you can ACTUALLY SEE what I’m doing and what I’ve already done.

 

Make sense?

 

Yeah I knew you already knew this.

 

And actually a while back on one of my Youtube videos where I make the boxer briefs, I had a few people comment saying they couldn’t see what I was sewing due to the tone on same tone stitching.

 

So I did the OBVIOUS thing to do and I listened.

 

Profound huh?

Why you’re wasting time trying to be different

Hey Suga!

 

Where were you last night?

 

Hopefully not out doing something that you ain’t got no business doing…

 

Anywho, last night I sent out an email about having uploaded a new picture and some new videos for all the registered students.

 

I hope you enjoy and I hope the pictures get you to start fantasizing about your new sewing ability with the help of my Academy.

 

And I just uploaded some new pictures on my facebook and I’ll have them up on the Academy site soon.

 

Moving on…

 

Let’s talk briefly about being different…

 

Although we all want to be unique and individual and DIFFERENT, we must first understand what we are saying.

 

Yes we have all heard that each of us is unique.

 

And we are…

 

But don’t most of us have 10 fingers and 10 toes, 2 legs, 2 eyes, etc.?

 

What’s unique about that?

 

We all wear clothing in some form or fashion, but wearing clothing is not unique at all.

 

And as far as humans creating new things, we can stop right there.

 

When you get down to it, we don’t create anything.

 

To create is to make some that was never there before.

 

We don’t do that.

 

Taking something in one form and changing it is RE-creating.

 

Take a stove for instance.

 

All the materials used to make that stove were here on this earth in some form or another, and someone came along and put things together that had never been joined before in “that” way.

 

It’s like making your favorite cookies from scratch.

 

Take these ingredients, follow the recipe and you have cookies!

 

That’s what humans do.

 

So even in fashion, don’t become easily frustrated because everything has been done already and you can’t find anything new to come up with.

 

Your mental  block is coming from your Definition of what it means to come up with something new.

 

If you change your definition to mean: taking 2 or more things/design concepts/ silhouettes/ etc. that have never been joined and putting them together in new ways, then you get the illusion of creation.

 

Or at least what everyone thinks is creation.

 

That’s your lesson for today:

Don’t try to be brand new! Try to make new, weird, unique combinations out of old and/or basic concepts.

Quick Email Then I Gotta Start

Hey suga!

 

Today I have two goals for this email and I have to run and do some other things.

 

First off I have a question/suggestion from someone that will lead me into the second goal for today,

 

Which will lead me to get off of the email and get to work.

 

Okie dokie…

 

First, remember yesterday or a few days ago when I was telling you how I am trying to incorporate all these things into my site and business as a whole from things you said?

 

Well here’s 2 similar comments I got from off of my Youtube channel:

 

1)     I’d like to see the finished product too ; o; it would be nice to show a photo of what your actually talking about :’/

 

And…

 

2)     hey by any chance can you show me the finished product. bc one thing is seeing the pattern ..another thing is seeing how it looks after its made. =] thanks.

 

Okay OKAY!

 

Now I’m listening!

 

So like I said I want to give you the best experience possible and it’s hard for you to grasp the concept without pictures of some kind, right?

 

So secondly, if you have a free moment can you please respond to this email and just say Yes I agree yada yada yada, or No I don’t care about pictures yada yada yada.

 

That would at least let me know I’m touching on the right keys here.

 

You can take this same knowledge and apply it to your designing efforts.

 

A portfolio full of pictures and sketches should definitely get your designing some more attention.

Trip to Your Mind’s Sewing Table

Hey suga!

For today’s lesson

I want you to go with me for a moment to your sewing table—

Not in reality, but imagine you’re there.

You’re sitting at your table and you’re reading the store bought pattern’s instructions and it says for your sleeve you have to Ease the cap between the notches and sew it to your armhole.

You think, “Oh yeah that’s easy! I just sew my gathering stitches and gather it up and place it into the armhole. Piece of cake!”

Then later on it says to attach the skirt you need to Gather the waistline of the skirt and match it to the edge of the bodice waist while matching the dots.

Then you think,” Wait a minute… If gathering and easing are the same why do they use two different words? Or at least, I thought they were the same. Now I’m confused!…”

Well you’re close!

And if no one’s ever told you the difference before, it’s okay, don’t worry about it.

Gathering and easing are very similar in their application.

Gathering and easing both have you sew a line or two of gathering stitches to make a big section of fabric sew onto a smaller piece.

That’s where the similarities end.

The biggest difference after that is that gathering is usually done on fabric that is anywhere from an inch bigger than the piece it has to sew to, to and infinite number of inches bigger.

The thinner the fabric, the more gathers it can take.

And for easing it’s done on fabric that is from about an inch too big down to  1/8” too big.

There’s also another big difference that lies in the execution:

With easing you should not see any creasing, gathering, and or pleating on the seam line on the right side of the fabric after you sew the seam allowance.

With gathering, you should definitely see the mini creases that gathering creates on the right side of the fabric and they should be evenly distributed.

And that’s it!

Unlocking the Mysteries of Clothing

This weekend has been one of remarkable changes.

 

As I’m sure you know, one thing you can depend on me for is to be changing something, to be coming up with some new discovery to uncover for us to marvel over.

 

I was surfing my Youtube and I came to a remarkable discovery about you guys that I feel you’ve been saying constantly but that I’ve been completely ignoring…

I’ll get to that in a minute—

 

First let me talk about something that someone said in one of my how to make the perfect pair of boxer briefs video.

 

It was something to the effect of…

 

“You have a great video but make sure your seams all intersect at right angles because it’ll cause problems when you sew up your patterns…”

 

This is totally true.

 

I understand exactly what he’s saying.

 

In addition, I have found the opposite to be true also.

 

Let me explain…

 

Let’s go back to Highschool Algebra/Geometry shall we?

 

(I promise not to make this too difficult )

 

When you have two 90 degree angles that come together you get something that resembles a T symbol.

 

There are (2) 90 degree angles on both sides of the intersecting line right?

 

Now when you add 90 degrees plus 90 degrees you get 180 degrees right?

 

That is the amount of degrees for a straight line basically.

 

So what you are creating with your to 90 degree angled seams is one straight edge once the seams are sewn.

 

So if your finished product has a straight edge on it, does it matter if your seams intersect at right angles or not?

 

That’s a mystery to be discovered and discussed at a later time.

 

In the future I’ll tell you about a situation where I actually did what I was explaining above.

 

But I feel like I’m getting too complicated!

 

Anywho, so I’ve been trying to dig deep and find out exactly what you all want to find out and what you’re saying you need to learn about.

And like I said, you’ve been totally saying it the whole time, but I haven’t really understood what you mean.

 

From my understanding, you aren’t really into patternmaking—

 

Not because you don’t like it, but because it’s too complicated and advanced.

 

You would love to learn how to make patterns, but you’re not really sure if you can make clothing in the first place!

 

I want to interrupt myself to tell you that making clothing isn’t that hard—

 

Once I teach you the secret techniques and secret language of making clothing…

 

Back to you…

 

I feel like you’re a person who subscribes to Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue magazine because you love knowing what’s going on in fashion…

 

And you hope to be featured in those mags yourself on day (you definitely can).

 

But all those beautiful garments seem so complicated!

 

How are you supposed to become a famous fashion designer if you can’t even sew something simple like a t-shirt?

 

Maybe the most you’ve sewn is like taking a sheet out of the closet and drawing a body shape on it and sewing the pieces together…

 

Only to realize that shirt doesn’t fit!

 

And what REAL designer would ever make something out of cheap bed sheets.

 

I used to be hard on myself to but you can do it, I promise!

 

And I just recently felt like you wanted more knowledge but you’re low on funds!

 

You got kids that need feeding and clothing and even though it might take you longer, you could still save a few dollars buying some inexpensive fabric and making a couple of shirts for the kids with it right?

 

But if you don’t understand what you’re doing, you don’t want to waste money that could be going towards your bills.

 

I understand that.

 

SO from this moment forward, I’m chopping the price for a monthly membership to the Academy down from $47/month to just $12/month, no b.s.

Every now and then I get questions from my newsletter subscribers and when I get good ones, I try to answer some of the questions in an email to everyone…

 

Because sometimes other people have those same questions but are afraid to ask.

 

So here’s a few questions I got just recently:

 

~What days & hours are your classes available?

 

~~My classes are online of course, but they are also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to make it easy to fit in with your busy schedule, no matter if you’re taking classes at 12 o’ clock noon, or 2 am in the morning.

 

~Are the classes different from your Youtube videos?

 

~~Yes and No.

 

Yes because the classes are 3X more in-depth than my Youtube videos and I really get to go deep within a subject that I am teaching.

 

No because it’s the same down to earth, detailed, easy to understand and easy to follow along tutorials that you’ve come to love.

 

Well anywho, I hope that answered some of your questions.

How To Keep Your Legs Closed :)

You know suga,

 

Sometimes it helps to keep your legs closed.

 

It makes life flow a little more smoothly.

 

It minimizes your chance of having little surprises down the line, if you know what I mean…

 

Maybe you’re saying, “I don’t really follow… unless you mean…”

 

You dart legs silly!

 

Ok, ok, some other things in life just happen to be very similar, but when it comes to sewing, keeping your dart legs closed properly is essential to maintaining your fit.

 

And if you want to get the full experience out of your bodice, you have to move the dart legs into another position and even change the way the dart behaves all together.

 

It’s like the Kama Sultra of fashion design.

 

But none of this will work if you don’t utilize your notches.

 

Wanna create your own clothing?

 

Wanna make clothing that gets people excited just thinking about working with you?

 

Want to make the stripes match perfectly across the garment (as they should)?.

Dead Designers Found Haunting Museums

Do you ever wonder…

 

You know at those museums that have old clothing from fashion designers that have been long gone?

 

Do the ghosts of those designers roam the halls in search of fashion victims to arrest?

 

Probably not but I do know one thing…

 

As scary as that was to think about, those designers have stuck their stick in the sands of time.

 

What do I mean by that?

 

Basically, by knowing their stuff and having flawless execution they were made immortal.

 

No matter the death that occurred, they will still be there years from now, showing off their talent in the form of beautiful garments that have stood the test of time.

 

You can make clothing that people will beg to see whether you’re alive or not.

 

You can make clothing that will leave people’s mouths open in astonishment.

Fashion Fame Monsters

Oh sugapie,

 

I don’t watch many fashion TV reality shows like I used too.

 

Why?

 

Too many fashion fame monsters.

 

Because in the pursuit of fame and fortune, some person goes and gives up everything to be told they don’t have what it takes.

 

Some of them were delusional from the very beginning and suffer being roasted in the fire of 2 million tv viewers.

 

And what is it “that it takes”?

 

Being prepared is all.

 

So okay how to be prepared, let’s discuss that.

 

No one notices a person who doesn’t have the right skills, the right knowledge, and the right preparation.

 

That person is doomed to a life of being ignored and making substandard garments.

 

But we all notice the person who is right in with trends and even when they’re not, their sheer command of fabric speaks for itself.

 

They have the power to handle questions and ohs and ahs from giggling onlookers.

 

But why?

 

Be prepared.

 

Study fashion, experiment with different techniques, and take them to the masses to feed off of their reaction.

 

Also try having fashion shows.

 

Not GHETTO SHOWS!

 

But nice industry standard shows where your clothing and your skill is put on the spotlight and people can grab you to ask for interviews for your local newspaper.

 

High school kids can write papers about your skills and interns will sit at your machine learning from your expertise.

 

But none of this will happen if you don’t prepare first!

 

Luck is just when opportunity meets preparation.

 

And no one ever gets lucky if they don’t prepare.

 

And lord help them if they do get lucky without preparation.

 

Their reputation will pay the price.

This email will be short and sweet… hopefully.

Let’s recap over a couple of things and then we’ll get into today’s lesson shall we?

First off…

Anywho, today’s lesson is simple Be U Whoever U R.

It’s so simple, but it means a lot.

It’s so easy nowadays to try and be everything to everybody but sooner or later you see you can’t.

Sometimes at the risk of your happiness and sometimes at the risk of your life, mentally or literally.

Just like at my J.O.B.

Sometimes when we get really busy I feel bad when I can’t handle all of the people asking me for things and the extra tables getting sat in bad timing but…

I’m only ONE person, I can only do so much.

And it reminds me that times have changed.

Quick story:

Wednesday Night there was a gala at the New Museum in New York where art and fashion goers rubbed elbows.

If you know anything about artists in the past you’ll know it wasn’t ‘cool’ for artists to be self-conscious about the way they looked.

Anh Duong even told Style.com, “Twenty years ago, I used to get crap for being into Fashion.”

Isn’t that horrible?

And thankfully nowadays boys don’t get crap for being into each other like the used to.

Life is just so much easier when people mind their own damn business right?

And for you, hopefully life has gotten better for you too so you can be yourself whoever you are.

You’ll also find that being yourself in fashion is a lot more expressive when you can say how you feel through your clothing.

What better way to do this than to make what you want when you want?

No boundaries, no inhibitions.

Just freeflowing designing.

And when you get stuck I’ll be there, maybe I’ll be able to point you in the right direction.
